Staff have been left stunned following the shock closure of a clothes store in Shrewsbury.

Employees at Ethel Austin in the Riverside Shopping Centre claim they were told to leave yesterday after bosses announced the store was to cease trading with immediate effect.

One staff member, who did not wish to be named, said: "Staff arrived at work at 9am and opened the doors as normal for business.

"An area manager came into the store at 9.10am and closed the shutters saying that the shop was to cease trading. All members of staff have now been made redundant with no notice period and no pay."

A worker at Ryman Stationery store said: "The manager came in here after they were told to leave and was crying.

"There were two wagons parked outside the entrance and men came and dismantled the shop."

No-one from Ethel Austin was available for comment.
