A woman from Shropshire who was given four months to live after being diagnosed with stomach cancer 15 years ago has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Fran Roberts, from Shawbury, near Shrewsbury, said the secret to a long life is faith and prayer.

The grandma to seven received more than 100 birthday cards from people all over Shropshire along with a message from the Queen.

She still lives alone but both her sons, Eddie, 71, and David, 64, live in the same street.

She said: "I have had great celebrations for my birthday.

"I think the secret to long life is faith and prayer."

Mrs Roberts was diagnosed with stomach cancer about 15 years ago and had to have half her stomach removed.

She also underwent a hip replacement operation in January.

Her son Eddie said it was amazing she is still here after her treatement.

He said the operation for her stomach cancer had been a major one for the family.

He said: "When she had the operation on her stomach at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital my brother and I said we would give her a fortnight.

"Now she eats more than me.

"She gets out and about, she goes to an afternoon club and the bingo every week.

"This birthday is a very special occasion."

Mrs Roberts lost her husband in 1971 and has lived on her own ever since.

She was born in Haughton, West Felton and has lived in Rednal, Shrewsbury and Shawbury.

She has worked as a house keeper on a number of farms and spent 20 years working in the canteen in Shawbury School and retired from there.

Eddie Roberts said his mother is well remembered at Shawbury School.

He added and has been inundated with cards for her birthday last Thursday.
