The Olympic spirit is alive and well in Wem after the new captain of the England women's football team visited schoolchildren.

Casey Stoney was at Thomas Adams School yesterday to meet youngsters and inspire the next generation of sports stars ahead of the London Olympics, which start later this month.

During her visit she met football-mad students and ran coaching sessions for year sevengirls.

Versatile defender Stoney has 103 caps for her country and currently plays for Lincoln Ladies.

England manager Hope Powell handed Stoney the captain's armband earlier this year.

Stoney started all four of England's games at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and converted her kick in the quarter-final penalty shoot-out defeat to France.

She moved from Chelsea to Lincoln in 2011 to play alongside fellow England stars stars such as Sue Smith and Jess Clarke and because they offered the chance of full-time training which was not on offer with the Blues.
