A Shropshire primary school which is seeing an increase in pupil numbers now wants to expand to help cater for the youngsters. Morda Primary School has a capacity for 126 pupils.

But in September there will be 147 youngsters on the roll at the school near Oswestry.

Staff have asked Shropshire Council's planning department for permission to have another classroom placed in its grounds for its 30 reception pupils.

It would also include toilets and a cleaner's store.

Head teacher John Eglin said if the plans were approved by the authority the demountable classroom could be ready to use by January.

A statement on behalf of the school said: "Morda CE Primary School is a popular village school and in recent years has seen a steady rise in pupil numbers.

"Presently reception age children are accommodated in an undersized class base so the provision of an additional classroom is required, releasing the small class base for much needed library/general purpose space for small group work."

The proposals for the new building show the classroom would be placed next to the nursery, which Mr Eglin believes would help with youngsters moving up from pre-school into school.

Mr Eglin said: "It would be a big advantage and would improve our facilities for that important group.

"We would also have a much nicer outdoors learning area.

"It would be a welcome and much-needed investment in Morda."
