A roundabout was closed off to traffic for more than three hours after a fully-laden cement mixer crashed into a lamppost and overturned on a Telford road.

The driver of the mixer managed to clamber to safety apparently unharmed in the crash on the Hortonwood island at about 4pm yesterday.

The man was driven to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford for precautionary checks following the incident, and a section of the A518 from Trench Lock to the roundabout was closed while a crane lifted the lorry back into an upright position.

Fire crews from Telford Central and Wellington stations were called in with police and roads adjoining the island were closed off as they worked at the scene.

Crew manager Tean Treharne, of Telford Central fire station, said: "The mixer had overturned on the Hortonwood roundabout but the driver wasn't trapped.

"He was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

"We were at the scene for about 90 minutes making it safe and the police were also in attendance.

"The mixer had been carrying a full load. It collided with a street light and bent it so the electricity company was called in to deal with that."
