Ambulance in A49 death crash

A man died and four others were injured in a horror crash in Shropshire involving a car and an ambulance carrying a patient.

A man died and four others were injured in a horror crash in Shropshire involving a car and an ambulance carrying a patient.

The smash happened on the A49 just south of Preston Brockhurst, near Wem, yesterday. The driver of the Volkswagen car, who has not been named, died at the scene.The female driver of the ambulance was seriously injured.

She was trapped inside the ambulance for two hours and had to be cut free before being airlifted to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

She suffered head, leg and pelvis injuries.

She is described as being in a comfortable condition today.

The ambulance was carrying a patient who had been involved in another road accident when the crash happened at about 2pm.

Another woman, in her 20s, who was the passenger in the car, had to be cut free from the wreckage and was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with serious head and chest injuries. She was today in a critical but stable condition.
