One of Shropshire's largest colleges has appointed a new principal, it was announced today.

Steve Wain has taken over the running of Shrewsbury College following the retirement of former head Greg Molan last week.

Mr Molan decided to step down to 'seek fresh experiences' outside of work.

He has been in charge of the college, which has its main campus in London Road, for nine years.

Mr Wain was appointed following a selection process involving governors, students and staff.

He has more than 20 years' experience in further education, which started in West London in the early 1990s.

He went on to spend nine years at Gloucestershire College, progressing from section leader to director of learning technologies. Between 2004 and 2006, he was director of curriculum, performance and standards at Stroud College and in 2007, took up his first principal's post at St Vincent College in Gosport, where he had lived as a child.

Mr Wain said: "I am thrilled to have joined Shrewsbury College as the new principal.

"I can see that the college has many significant strengths and I've been very impressed with the staff and students I have met so far.

"The governors are ambitious for the college and the wider community and I'm looking forward to achieving their ambitions over the next few years."

Outgoing principal, Mr Molan, said: "The last nine years seem to have gone very quickly.

"It has been a privilege to work with such a great bunch of staff and I am very proud to have been part of all they have achieved.

"Further education colleges make such a positive contribution to our society."
