A woman and two children fled their semi-detached home in Shropshire after smoke alarms alerted them to a fire which had broken out in the bathroom.

Smoke alarms at the property in Monkmoor Road in Shrewsbury were responsible for saving their lives, fire officers said today.

All three family members managed to escape unharmed and an investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.

Firefighters from Shrewsbury were called to the house at about 11.40pm on Saturday.

They donned breathing apparatus to tackle the fire and then used a fan to ventilate the two-storey house.

Crew manager Richard Meadows said the cause of the fire was unknown and an investigation was under way.

The fire was put out just after midnight.

In a separate incident, a fire crew from Wellington was called out to reports of a fire at an address in Hurleybrook Way, Leegomery, in Telford just after 8pm on Saturday.

Watch manager Ian Lee, of Wellington fire station, said a grill pan had been left on, which set off smoke alarms.

He said a man and woman, who were in the property at the time with a child, tackled the incident by taking the pan outside before firefighters arrived on the scene.

No one was hurt in the incident.
