A woman has been airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in a two-car collision on a road near Wem today.

A woman has been airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in a two-car collision on a road near Wem today.

The incident happened at the turning for Grinshill on the A49 near Preston Brockhurst at about 11.40am.

Police say at least one person suffered serious injuries in the incident which caused the road to be closed in both directions.

The woman was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

Emergency crews were still working to free the other driver this afternoon.

The accident comes exactly one week after 25-year-old Keiran Moore-Hughes, from Shrewsbury, was killed in a collision with an ambulance on the road.

Maria Wilkinson, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "Police are dealing with a serious collision between two cars on the A49 near Preston Brockhurst."

She continued: "Motorists are advised to avoid the area."
