Organisers of the Shrewsbury Flower Show today hailed the success of its 125th anniversary event after tens of thousands of people flocked to the Quarry showground.

Peter Road-Night, the show's operations director and secretary of Shropshire Horticultural Society, said it was too early to tell how many people attended the event, but early indications suggested visitor numbers exceeded last year's 48,000 total.

"The whole thing has been superb," he said. "With the summer we have had this year, we have been phenomenally lucky.

"We as organisers are very, very happy with the show. What has been good this year is all the various parts have come together and that is what makes a good show."

Exhibitors, traders and show-goers said they had enjoyed this year's event, which was blessed with dry weather throughout.

Deirdre Hodgkinson, from Shropshire Plant Heritage, which exhibited a ruined abbey garden, said there had been plenty of interest from visitors.

First-time visitor Teresa Veitch, 66, from Bromsgrove, said she was impressed with the standard at Shrewsbury.
