Plans were today unveiled for a £5million nursing home in Shropshire which could create up to 125 jobs.

Developer Benson Bros Limited has submitted a planning application for an 87-bed care home on residential land off Shillingston Drive in Battlefield, Shrewsbury.

It is thought the scheme could create up to 75 full-time and 50 part-time jobs if it eventually goes ahead.

The home would specialise in care for elderly people suffering from dementia and other patients requiring constant nursing care.

The three-storey building would have a car park with space for 55 vehicles, along with kitchens, a laundry, and administrative accommodation.

Managing director of Benson Bros Ltd, Rob Hancocks, said: "We are delighted to be able to bring forward this care facility which could create around 125 jobs for the local economy."

Developers say the building will be a cross between a hospital and a country club.

A design and access statement submitted to Shropshire Council in support of the scheme, said: "There is a significant need for dementia beds in the region. Three care providers are keen to take on the site should it gain approval."

The site, which would be accessed off Shillingston Drive, is next to land earmarked for potential development of 250 homes by Persimmon Homes.

The housing scheme has been met with fierce opposition from residents with nearly 150 objections lodged with Shropshire Council.

But developers behind the care home proposals have had more positive feedback following consultation.

Kay Rogers, from nearby Hallam Drive said: "Harlescott and Sundorne need employment opportunities so not opposed to this but the area cannot take another 250 homes."

The plans are currently under consideration by Shropshire Council. If approval is granted the care home could be built within the next three years.
