The water, more than three inches deep in places, gushed down Moreton Street, in Prees, after a burst main tore through the road at about 2.30pm yesterday.

It left at least four homes damaged police, firefighters and technicians from Severn Trent Water scrambled to protect nearby properties with sandbags.

Diversions were set up and the main was gradually turned off, leaving residents still unable to get through for more than six hours.

The road was badly damaged with eyewitnesses saying the burst's pressure had 'ripped it apart'.

Resident Barry Collins, 65, of Moreton Street, said: "The infrastructure round here is clapped out and it's not the first time this has happened.

"But this is the worst we've been affected."
