Seven suspected drink-drivers held in Shropshire over weekend
Seven suspected drink drivers were arrested on Shropshire's roads during the bank holiday weekend.
Police said the clampdown saw officers target traffic in the early hours.
Some suspects have already been charged and sent to court, while others have been given bail while inquiries continue.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said today: "Don't drink and drive. If you risk it, you are compromising road safety and there is a strong possibility you will be stopped – it is only a matter of time. Those recently arrested will now be regretting their actions. It's just not worth it."
Six of the offenders were men and one was a woman. They were stopped at Market Drayton, All Stretton, Wem, Much Wenlock, Shrewsbury and Broseley.
In one case, a 27-year-old man who gave a positive breath test after being stopped on Battlefield Road, Shrewsbury, was charged with driving with excess alcohol, driving whilst already disqualified, taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty and driving without insurance.
Punishment for drink driving or drug driving offences can include a minimum 12 month driving ban, up to six months in prison, a fine of up to £5,000 and a criminal record.
Vicki Bristow, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia, said that over the past three years 126 people have been killed or seriously injured in West Mercia as a result of collisions involving drink or drugs.
She added: "There is still a significant minority of people who are risking it and are being caught in areas where public transport is an option to them. Our message is simple and continues to be 'Don't drink and drive – it's not worth the risk'."
