The woman was driving southbound on the A442 when the incident happened at the Randlay Interchange shortly before 9.30am.

Emergency services were called out and the road was partially blocked for more than an hour while the woman was treated by paramedics and the car, a red MG, was removed from the carriageway.

Firefighters gave the driver first aid treatment and trauma care until paramedics arrived. They also made the vehicle safe so police could clear the carriageway.

Denise Wakefield, for West Mercia Police, said initial reports had said the woman was trapped in her car, but in fact she had managed to get out before police arrived.

"Only one vehicle was involved in the incident," she added.

Clare Thomas, for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said paramedics treated the woman, who was out of the car.

She added: "She was immobilised with a neck collar and spinal board as a precaution and taken to the Princess Royal Hospital."
