The former head boy at Bishop's Castle Community College said it was strange to be home 'in the rain' after suffering in the African deserts. The team slept in tents surrounded by hyenas, almost lost toenails and fingernails in desert heat and were 'eaten alive' by ravenous insects.

Mr Morris said since arriving back in Bishop's Castle last week he had been regularly stopped in the street and asked about his adventure which covered 12,000 miles.

He said: "We cycled through countries that are perceived as dangerous but while Government policies and media create differences, everywhere we turned up, we found people just willing to help us, talk to us, share their life, and share their food and water. "
