Teme Leisure says it will not run Wem Swimming Pool next year for 'economic reasons'.

Now the town council, which owns the pool, is investigating setting up a community trust to run it.

Teme Leisure said it would stop running the Butler Sport Centre pool at the end of December due to a 'change in business focus and for economic reasons'.

A statement from the company said: "Teme Leisure would like to express its gratitude to Wem Town Council and the local community for their support of the swimming pool during the past two years."

The company originally helped secure the future of the pool in 2010 when Wem Swimming Centre Ltd, the company which used to run it, was declared insolvent.

Councillor Peter Broomhall, mayor, said: We would like to thank Teme Leisure for operating Wem pool for the last two years. The town council believes a pool is an essential facility and we are working hard to secure its future."
