Changes in car parking fees move a step closer
Changes to car parking charges across Shropshire are a big step closer – but will still need the final approval of Shropshire Council leaders before they can come into force.
The plans would see a 10p charge for up to two hours' parking in some of the market towns, an end to Sunday fees in Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Ellesmere, Wem, Church Stretton and Much Wenlock, and new charges for on-street Sunday parking in Ludlow and Shrewsbury.
The changes, expected to cost Shropshire Council around £218,000 in lost income, were approved by its enterprise and growth scrutiny committee at Shirehall yesterday.
They will go before cabinet on October 17 and, if approved, come into force on December 3.
Chairman Steve Davenport said the council was willing to take a hit to help the county economy.
"If cabinet approves this, the council stands to lose £218,000 in car parking revenue, but we're understanding and listening to people about bringing tourism to our market towns."
Under the plans, first hour free car parking in Ellesmere, Market Drayton, Much Wenlock, Wem and Whitchurch would be scrapped and replaced with a 10p charge for the first two hours and £1.80 for up to 10 hours.
There would also be free Sunday parking in Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Ellesmere, Wem, Church Stretton and Much Wenlock.
Sunday parking in Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow will be cut to half the weekday rate, and there would be free parking on Bank and public holidays on all surface car parks.
