Bishop's Castle Town Hall revamp funds joy
An historic Shropshire building is to be transformed after Heritage Lottery Fund chiefs agreed to hand over almost £700,000 for major work to restore it to its former glory.
Bishop's Castle Town Hall, an 18th century Grade II listed building, will undergo a massive re-development and be turned into a 'community hub'.
But officials in Ludlow have been left disappointed after their bid for £16,900 to draw up development plans for a £1.778 million project involving the town's Grade I listed Buttercross, town walls, castle garden and footpaths was rejected.
The town hall in High Street once housed the local gaol in the basement and criminal courts above the market hall. It was built in 1750.
Town clerk Diane Malley today said: "We are trying to get the town hall back to its original state.
"At the front of the town hall there are a set of stairs which will be removed so views down from the market hall will be stunning. We will also install a lift so disabled people will have better access to the building."
