Lack of volunteers threatens Wellington Carnival
Wellington Carnival could be called off next year unless more volunteers come forward to helped organise the popular event.
This year nearly 4,000 attended the carnival, in Bowring Park Recreation Ground, despite downpours with hundreds also joining a walking parade.
But carnival chairman Denis Allen has issued a warning that next year's event is at risk unless more people help.
The carnival was cancelled last year when the size of the organising committee dropped to just two people.
The committee bounced back this year with 10 people organising the successful event but next year's event is now hanging in the balance.
Mr Allen, who lives in Wellington, said: "The carnival is at risk of being cancelled again.
"We have a very good team but the Wellington Unity Carnival Committee needs 'new blood' in order for the carnival to happen in 2013.
"Increasing age, ill health and increased work commitments are some of the reasons why some existing members of the committee, although willing to continue to give their support, would like to share their workload with new volunteers.
"There is a real danger that it will not go on if we do not get extra hands."
Mr Allen said they needed half a dozen new volunteers to secure the carnival's future.
They must be able to attend the meetings once a month and also be available the day before and on carnival day – set for June 22, 2013.
This year the carnival event included the Whitchurch Dog Display Team, demonstrations of kung fu and tai chi and a hawk display by Feather Perfect Falconry,
Mr Allen said: "This year was a great success.
"We have wonderful support from the RMP Group, in Telford, and Wrekin College.
"RMP gives us a lot of support and we owe a lot to them.
"They are absolutely brilliant and I am amazed at the help we get from them.
"Wrekin College is also a tremendous help with equipment and people."
