A multi-million pound expansion of Rugeley Power Station that will safeguard 170 jobs was unveiled today.

The project will also provide a shot in the arm for construction and supply companies across Staffordshire as bosses have pledged to use local firms for the two-year scheme, creating up to 500 temporary positions.

The proposed work, which will include construction of a 187ft cleaning tower, a new fuel storage facility and 12 storage silos, will mean the station will be primarily burning bio fuels more than coal for the first time.

The development is in response to the Government's target to increase renewable energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It will use the existing power plant facilities and safeguard jobs for the future of the site's 170 employees. All additional plant and equipment required for the conversion would be located within the existing 372 acre site.

Councillor Tim Jones, a member of Rugeley Town Council, says the plans have so far been given a warm reaction in the town.

He said: "There is a support for biomass as long as it is not waste that is being burned there."
