Check-out girl Nancy Ball has worked for the same supermarket in Shrewsbury for 47 years.

And despite an 18 month break due to illness – the long-serving employee, who is nearly 90, is planning to return to the Asda store in Old Potts Way this Christmas.

It was in 1966 that Nancy first went for a job at the Safeway supermarket in Abbey Foregate.

She was taken on as catering manager and in 1970, she moved onto the check-outs.

Over the years, she has become a well-known and well-loved face among the thousands of customers she serves.

Despite passing retirement age, she went with the store to its new location on Old Potts Way and was also there to see Asda takeover the Safeway franchise.

Now, the supermarket stalwart is getting ready to return to her beloved customers this Christmas.

She said: "I've got to be there to see all my customers. They are not really customers any more, they are friends.
