St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury could get the crypt as part of a £2.5 million overhaul of the church.

It follows a fundraising campaign that began in 2010, with repairs starting on the building's stonework and nave last year.

Development director David Tudor said that building new facilities such as a visitor centre underground could help to expand what the church can offer, without affecting the outside appearance of the church. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

A funding target for the campaign of £2.5 million was set two years ago, with the programme of improvements planned to include making the church weatherproof, modernising the heating system and refurbishing the organ.
