The future of a disused primary school near Shrewsbury which council bosses are looking to sell off for more than £1 million will be discussed at a public meeting this week.

Shropshire Council wants to dispose of Bayston Hill's former Oakland School site. Villagers will be given a chance to have their say on what should happen to it at a meeting of their local joint committee on Thursday.

The school shut its doors in 2009 after more than 35 years serving the village.

It was amalgamated with the village's Longmeadow Primary School.

Once amalgamated the two schools joined their names, creating Oakmeadow Primary School.

Councillor Ted Clarke said villagers were welcome to come to the talks and share their views about what should happen to the site.

"Please come along and share your thoughts on the old school site and any other local issues of concern," he said.

The meeting, at the Oakmeadow Primary School at 7pm, follows a public consultation event held in September on what should be done with Oakland School.

When news first broke of the merger plans back in 2008, campaigners from Oakland Primary School made an emotional plea to councillors to drop the idea.

Fears were raised that one big school serving the village would not be a good move for its youngsters.

But Shirehall chiefs pushed ahead, spending a total of £4 million on bringing together the two institutions to create a single school for the village.

Alongside the opportunity for any other questions and points to be raised at the meeting, the police will be on hand to give their their regular update on crime issues.
