He was hit with a spiked baseball bat and a piece of wood, the court was told.

Victim Ismaaeel Rehman suffered serious head injuries when he was struck on the head and body while on the ground, a jury at Stafford Crown Court heard.

Jason Noto, 24 of Powys Place, Dawley Bank, and Robert Jones, 24, of Webb Crescent, Dawley, both deny murder.

Giving evidence behind a screen, Rebecca Blakemore said she had seen the assault on a security monitor at a friend's flat and later through the window.

She said she had seen the victim on the CCTV outside Noto's ground floor flat just before 1am on July 17, 2009.

Miss Blakemore said she knew Noto and saw him hit the man with a long piece of wood. "He was hit on the left temple and the man fell to the ground," she said.

"Jones hit him in the face with a bat. It was three or four times," she claimed.

Miss Blakemore said spikes were wrapped around the top of the bat which she knew was owned by Noto.

She said the man was also struck in the ribs.

The jury has heard Mr Rehman, of Dudley, was later treated in intensive care. Mr Andrew O'Byrne, prosecuting, said, as a direct result of the assault, Mr Rehman developed epilepsy and, on New Year's Day last year, died after suffering a seizure at a relative's home.

The trial continues
