Planners at Shropshire Council have taken the wraps off proposals to shut St Julian's Friars to traffic and build improved crossings at the bottom of Wyle Cop.

The plans are part of a major development programme for Shrewsbury. Public consultation is taking place until November 2, with council bosses hoping to have the transformation completed by next summer.

The plans went on display to the public for the first time yesterday at an exhibition held at Abbots Mead Hotel in St Julian's Friars.

Richard Harman, an engineer with Shropshire Council, said traffic that currently uses St Julian's Friars would be diverted down new roads,

Williams Way and St Julian's Crescent. He said: "It is a pretty busy street at the moment as it takes cars, pedestrians and cyclists all on a narrow road.

"If people are in agreement with the idea to close off the end of St Julian's Friars, we would be looking to put in a temporary scheme as we want to test the road network with the closure in place."

If it goes ahead the work could take around three months to complete.
