Second Shrewsbury Home Bargains store will create 40 jobs
Discount convenience store Home Bargains is to open a second store in Shrewsbury – creating 40 jobs.
More than £500,000 will be spent transforming the old Netto supermarket in Abbey Foregate, which closed down last September, into the new shop.
Spokesman Bryan Bell confirmed that the new store will open its doors on December 8. Home Bargains already has a branch in the Darwin Shopping Centre. But the news comes on the same day that it was announced a supermarket is to shut next month, with the loss of 24 jobs.
The Co-operative store in the Riverside Shopping Centre will cease trading from November 21, with company bosses blaming the move on the branch's 'poor trading performance'.
A spokesman for The Co-operative said: "We can confirm that our store in the Riverside Shopping Centre, Shrewsbury will be closed from Sunday November 21."
He added: "Every effort is being made to redeploy as many as possible of the 24 members of staff with The Co-operative, or to help them find alternative employment."
The Co-op is the latest store to quit Shrewsbury's shopping centres ahead of £150 million plans to link the Riverside, Pride Hill and Darwin complexes into one giant mall.
