47 jobs go as Co-op axes shops in Welshpool and Newtown
Two Co-op supermarkets are to close with the loss of 47 jobs, it was revealed today.
The Co-operative stores in Berriew Street, Welshpool, and Kerry Road, Newtown, are due to close on November 28.
Three full-time staff and 20 part-time workers will lose their jobs at Welshpool and six full-time and 18 part-time jobs will go in Newtown.
A Co-op spokesman said all the workers had been told about the closures and were being offered help to find new jobs or be redeployed.
"The closure is due to poor trading performance and is not, in any way, a reflection on the commitment and hard work of the store team," he said.
Welshpool Mayor Councillor John Meredith said he was devastated to hear people were losing their jobs.
He said: "It is a big blow to the town. It is a lot of jobs, I hope that the employees will get re-employed in the town."
