Bill Greaves, who was a member of Wem Town Council for 10 years and mayor between 1983 and 1984, died after a 12-month illness. Mr Greaves, who was born in Aston, Birmingham, was described by family and former colleagues as a 'happy' and 'lovely' man.

The father of two, grandfather of four and great-grandfather of five moved to Wem in about 1970 and founded the family business Lindon Heating, which is still running today in Market Drayton.

Mr Greaves, whose hobbies included playing and watching sport, was involved in the Wem Sports Association, chamber of trade, the Royal British Legion and bowling club.

His son David, who lives in Market Drayton, said: "He was happy, cheerful and I think people got to see what a great guy he was.

"He wanted to get involved in things, help people and liked to organise things."

He said his father spent some of the latter years of his life in Spain before spending time with his family in Market Drayton.

Councillor Pauline Dee, current member of the town council, praised the work he did in Wem. She said: "He was one of my mentors when I first went onto the council.

"He gave me a lot of support as a new councillor and I had a lot of respect for him.

Mr Greaves, who lived in Pyms Road, Wem, died from heart failure in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on October 6.

His funeral service will take place at St Peter and St Paul's Parish Church in Wem on October 22 at 2pm. This will be followed by burial at Love Lane Cemetery in Wem.
