Hobsons Brewery, in Cleobury Mortimer, and the Salopian Brewery in Shrewsbury, scooped the accolades at the National Brewery Centre in Burton on Trent.

Hobsons, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, won silver in the mild category with Hobsons Mild and bronze in the golden ales section with Town Crier.

Salopian won silver in the best bitter category with the Hop Twister and joint bronze in the bitter category with Shropshire Gold.

CAMRA bosses say there are more than 1,000 British breweries producing over 6,000 real ales, the highest number for over 70 years.

The Shropshire breweries were amongst the top 20 breweries in the country which collected national titles.

The finalists for the Champion Beer of Britain were chosen on a regional basis via local tasting panels and regional beer judging competitions.

Bosses at both county breweries said they were delighted to be named amongst Britain's best and hoped the recognition will lead to a boost in both local and national sales.

Nick Davis, owner of Hobson's said: "Quality has always been at the heart of everything we do, so it is fantastic to have won two national awards for two different styles of beer, real credit to the team at Hobsons"

Jake Douglas, sales manager at the Salopian, said: "We are over the moon at getting a national award. It's great news for both breweries and shows people across the country the quality of beer being produced in Shropshire. Hopefully people will see the quality ale we are producing."
