Shropshire Council's U-turn on sick pay

Thousands of council workers in Shropshire, who threatened to strike over controversial changes to sick pay, were today told the 'unfair' policy is to change.

Shropshire Council had been threatened with a mass walk-out by union members when it altered its sick pay rules last October.

But now Shirehall is proposing to change the sick pay policy once again following talks with union leaders.

It means the council would pay staff for the first three days of sickness absence, regardless of previous sickness record.

Today the council said although sickness absence fell dramatically after the policy was introduced, it was clear staff felt the changes had been unfair.

Alan James, Unison branch secretary at Shropshire Council, said: "I am delighted we have managed to reach this agreement."
