New Shrewsbury restaurant in 15th century building opens doors
A new restaurant and bar in one of Shropshire's most historic buildings has thrown open its doors to the public.
Henry Tudor House in Barracks Passage, off Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury, opened for the first time yesterday, after a year of work transforming the building which used to house the Old Lion Tap pub.
The ground floor brasserie at the site is now open, with the first-floor restaurant section of the property expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks.
Clare Jenkins, who is running the business with her husband Graham, said the opening day has been a success.
Mrs Jenkins, who used to be a director for the Royal Institute of British Architects in the West Midlands, said she hoped the new business would prove to be popular with people in Shrewsbury. She said she and her husband had been looking to open a restaurant in the town when the Old Lion Tap came on to the market last year.
"It happened to be in the right place at the right time," she said.
"There are some decent restaurants here but we are hopefully trying to offer something that appeals to a wide market."
The huge medieval building has a rich history and was reputed to have got its name when Henry Tudor stayed at the site on his way to victory over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.
