The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, which is based in Clee Hill, near Ludlow, received

in the space of three days after its magazine featured as the guest publication on last week's show, taking the charity's fanbase past the 8,000 follower mark.

Host Jeremy Clarkson and panellists including regulars Ian Hislop and Paul Merton were among those to take the mickey out of some of the articles in the newsletter as they attempted to find amusing suggestions for potential headlines in one of the rounds.

The stories in question included former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe claiming hedgehogs were close to her heart and another piece which suggested ways of linking whisky and hedgehogs in the same event.

Chief executive Fay Vass with the newsletter

Fay Vass, chief executive of the charity, travelled down to London on Thursday as a special guest to see the show being filmed before it was broadcast on Friday.

An extended version of the show – Have I Got More News For You – was also screened on Monday night.

Miss Vass said: "There was a lot of light ribbing of our newsletter – Jeremy Clarkson was taking the mickey out of it and I was there watching him do it.

"But it was worth it for the publicity it has given us.

"We have had 800 new followers on Twitter since the show aired on Friday and it has taken us past the 8,000 mark.

"A lot of charities are queuing up for their newsletter or magazine to be featured on the show.

"Normally people apply to go on the show but in this case the show's producers approached us.

"I got invited down with a friend to watch the show being filmed at TV studios on London's South Bank.

"It was a great experience. I didn't get to speak to any of the panellists but the producers are going to send us DVDs of both shows."
