It was held at Bishop's Castle Community College last night.

And 89-year-old Mr Parsons was also in attendance to record a Children in Need special of his Just a Minute show, which he has hosted on Radio Four since 1967.

The Gardeners' Question Time panel was chaired by Eric Robson and featured experts Chris Beardshaw, Pippa Greenwood and Matthew Wilson, who helped solve local people's horticultural conundrums for an hour from 6.30pm.

Afterwards Mr Parsons made his recording using the panellists as Just a Minute competitors.

Members of South West Shropshire Gardening Club, who wrote to the BBC and invited the Gardeners' Question time team to the county, said they were delighted with how the evening was received.

Heather Williams, club membership secretary, said: "The evening went very well. The Question Time and quick Just a Minute were well received.

"People asked the panel about growing fruit trees and growing fruit on high areas around Shropshire."

The shows will be aired on Radio Four on Friday.
