Police use taser on victim after he cuts throat
A man with self-inflicted injuries was tasered by police in a village in Shropshire as officers struggled to detain him. The 51-year-old man had cut his throat in a flat in Shawbury.
Police said he had driven to a lane before locking his car doors.
Officers traced the vehicle, smashed the window and used a taser gun to make sure no one else got injured in the incident in the early hours of yesterday.
The man was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in a serious condition.
Police were initially called to The Lodge Flats, on the A53, shortly before 12.30am after a member of the public saw the man with a cut throat.
Richard Ewels, West Mercia Police spokesman, said: "Police officers attended an incident in Shawbury and discharged a taser device to detain a violent man with a knife who was suffering from a serious throat wound. It is believed the man's injuries were self-inflicted.
"A member of the public raised the alarm shortly before 12.30am. The man drove off but was quickly traced to the lane. They smashed a window to gain entry and discharged a taser device to prevent the man causing further injury."
Police have issued a witness appeal asking anyone who saw the man near The Lodge Flats just after midnight to call Shrewsbury Police Station on 101.
