Fears for Shropshire's Comet stores

Comet stores in Shropshire were not among those starting closing down sales at the weekend.

The stores in Shrewsbury and Telford did not feature on a list of 27 across the country which started closing down sales on Saturday.

But a further 14 stores will begin closing down sales early this week.

Despite the two county stores remaining open, fears remain over their long-term future and shoppers have expressed their disappointment with the retail giants' plight.

Paul Sherwood, from Cold Hatton, was visiting the firm's Telford branch on Bridge Retail Park yesterday.

He said only minor discounts were currently available and added the failure of Comet would result in Currys dominating the market.

"It is a shame it is going because you are leaving one provider in the marketplace so there is no competition," he added.

In Shrewsbury, husband and wife Donald and Anne Povey, from Mill Meadow, Shrewsbury, visited the shop on Meole Brace Retail Park.

Mr Povey said: "We have not brought anything from them recently, but over the years we have."

Comet is the latest casualty on the British High Street as other big brands such as JJB Sports, Clinton Cards, Blacks Leisure, Game and Peacocks have either disappeared or scaled back their presence in town centres after going into administration.
