Police in a Shropshire town branded one of the UK's hotspots for use of the 'party drug' GHB today warned people not to be tempted to use it over the festive season.

Officers claim they are winning their war on GHB in Oswestry and outlying areas of north Shropshire. In April last year Oswestry was named as the UK hotspot for abuse of GHB.

But Inspector Rik Klair, who is in charge of policing in the area, today said misuse of the substance had decreased in the last 18 months.

He said: "This is largely due to joint enforcement actions by police and education advice by health and council agencies."

But he warned: "GHB is still being supplied in the area and remains available."

He described the drug as 'extremely dangerous'.
