The attack happened on Monday when the girl, along with her 13-year-old friend, was walking along Limes Walk in Oakengates.

Just before 6pm, as the two girls were walking down the footpath next to The Place Theatre, they were approached from behind by an unknown man.

The man kicked the victim the face without warning, before immediately running off down the steps and across the car park to make his escape.

A police spokesman said: "This assault appears to be completely unprovoked and the two girls have been left very shaken by it.

"As a result of the incident the victim suffered bruising to her chin and upper chest but did not require any hospital treatment."

The attacker is described as being of mixed race, around 18-years-old and as having a slim build.

He was wearing a black 'puffa' jacket with the hood up and black tracksuit bottoms.

The police spokesman added: "Officers investigating this incident are looking for possible CCTV footage of it but, in the meantime, they are very keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or who may know who the man involved is."

Mayor of Oakengates, Councillor Stephen Reynolds, said he was saddened to hear of the attack.

He said: "The police are looking into this and I just hope that the perpetrator of this is identified and caught before he can do anything else."
