The 68-year-old younger brother of TV presenter David Dimbleby was at Ludlow Assembly Rooms last night to talk about Destiny in the Desert, a book which marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein in November 1942.

Mr Dimbleby – the host of Radio Four's Any Questions? – talked to the assembled audience about the historic footsteps and political and strategic realities that lay behind the famous World War Two battle.

Mr Dimbleby said he had penned the book by drawing on official records and personal insights of those involved at every level.

He spoke about the months building up to the Allied victory and the way it led to the retreat of the Afrika Korps and the German surrender in North Africa in May 1943.

Director of LAR Rachel Buchanan, said: "About 60 people turned up for the talk so it was quite an intimate evening.

"After the talk about the book Mr Dimbleby took questions from the audience which included questions from a man who was involved in the battles in North Africa."

He added: "After talking about the book for the first 40 minutes he then took more general questions about other things like the BBC and the Leveson Inquiry being published today."
