Two airlifted to hospital after crash near Whitchurch

A man and a woman were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a rush-hour crash on a main road in Shropshire.

Two cars were involved in the accident on the A49 near Whitchurch at about 7.45am yesterday.

The accident happened at Bradley Green and the road was closed for almost seven hours as the vehicles were removed from the scene and accident investigation work was carried out.

The man and woman were taken to North Staffordshire Hospital with serious injuries, although their condition was not believed to be life threatening.

Firefighters, officers from West Mercia Police and Cheshire Police all attended the scene.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire police appealed for information about the crash and asked anyone who saw anything to contact officers on 101.

She said: "It caused congestion in the area, and Cheshire Police is urging motorists to take extra care due to icy roads, particularly in rural areas.

"There are dangerous and slippery road conditions and motorists are being urged to remain vigilant."

Meanwhile, a van ended up in a hedge after a crash at nearby Wirswall, approximately one mile outside of Whitchurch.

A car and a van were involved in the crash on the A49 at about 7.35am. No-one was injured.
