Severn Hospice began its annual Lights of Love campaign at the historic venue yesterday, holding one afternoon and one early evening service at the venue to allow as many people as possible to attend.

The services included performances by Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir and Wem Jubilee Band.

The annual campaign, which raises thousands of pounds to aid the charity's work, asks local people to dedicate a light on the Severn Hospice Christmas tree in memory of a loved one.

Among those supporting the services was Debbie Harris, from Shifnal, along with her two sisters Jane Robson and Wendy Leary.

Debbie said: "Each year my sisters and I make a special dedication in memory of our dad, Cliff Smith, who died peacefully at the hospice in December 2008. We are so very grateful for the support, love and care dad and the whole family received at the time we needed it most. Dad specifically did not want to want to be alone when he died. Thanks to the support of the hospice we were able to spend his last few days with him reflecting on happier times, sharing some laughter and tears and hold him as he slipped away.

"By dedicating a light we know our contribution will go a small way to enable other families benefit."

Sarah Hawthorne, fundraising event organiser for Severn Hospice, said: "Our Lights of Love service is close to the hearts of so many people."

The Lights of Love tree is now being moved to Severn Hospice.
