Developers are exploring the possibility of creating the complex at Ellesmere Wharf.

They want to create a 188-berth boating marina and 120-bedroom hotel featuring a restaurant, lounge and bar areas.

It would also include a leisure spa with a swimming pool, fitness suite, indoor sports courts and bowling green.

It is not yet known how much the development will cost or how many jobs would be created. A planning application has yet to be submitted to Shropshire Council.

The scheme has already been discussed by councillors in Ellesmere.

Councillor Alan Clarke, mayor of Ellesmere, said: ""We can't not look forward to a positive development which will help with the future growth of the town."

But Councillor Ian Ward warned: "It is over-development. The intensity of that wouldn't look out of place in a city."

A letter to the town council from Nigel Thorns Planning Consultancy said: "The project would act as a key visitor attraction in the town."
