Steam engine enthusiast is victim of bungalow fire

[gallery] One of Shropshire's best known steam traction engine enthusiasts has died after a fire engulfed his bungalow in a village near Bridgnorth.

Firefighters and paramedics called to Vic Narburgh's home in Birdsgreen in Alveley, near Bridgnorth, yesterday could do nothing to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire broke out at about 3.30pm and residents reported seeing dense, black smoke pouring from the bungalow as the flames took hold.

More than 40 firefighters were called to the scene from stations in Bridgnorth and Cleobury Mortimer, as well as from Stourbridge in the West Midlands and Wombourne in Staffordshire.

The blaze gutted the bungalow and fire crews remained on site overnight making sure it did not reignite. The road was sealed off this afternoon while investigations were carried out.

Martin Timmis, head of prevention for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said it was a very severe fire which appeared to have developed rapidly.

He said: "It's currently too early to determine the cause of the fire but an investigation team is on site.
