Rally call over £5m bid to prevent Tenbury Wells floods

A top-level meeting is to be held next month in an attempt to solve the ever present-threat of flooding in and around a town centre.

The summit is being organised by Tenbury MP Harriett Baldwin, who said almost £5 million would be needed to protect Tenbury Wells, which lies on the River Teme, from the type of event which ravaged the area and caused extensive damage five years ago.

Those attending the flood defence summit would include councillors and representatives from the Environment Agency (EA).

Mrs Baldwin has met representatives from Malvern Hills District Council.

Last week, Mrs Baldwin wrote to the EA in a bid to secure funding for permanent flood defences.

The agency confirmed the town's proposed flood scheme would need funding of nearly £5 million.

Mrs Baldwin said the Government had announced a further £120 million, with £60 million being earmarked for schemes like Tenbury's, and that she intended to get the town a slice of the cash.

She added: "I have kept the pressure up to make sure Tenbury is not forgotten. I have ensured that £9 million has been spent on flood defences across my constituency and it is time to re-argue Tenbury's case.

"Following my meeting with the district council, it is clear that there is some impetus to try and fix this."
