Hawkstone Park Golf Club in Weston-under-Redcastle, near Wem, is hosting an open day to launch the academy. Ex-England team coach Keith Williams has joined the Shropshire club as head professional and will lead a team offering taster sessions and expert coaching.

Mr Williams's golf has spanned 30 years, during which time he has worked as the national coach for England and has coached European tour players, such as former PGA champion Scott Drummond.

The open day on December 27 runs from 10am to 1pm, and is for beginners and non-club member golfers. It will concentrate on putting and hitting balls on the range.

There will also be an opportunity to sign up for a further course of four one-hour group lessons.

All equipment and balls are free and the clubhouse will be open for food and drinks.

The open day is being supported by the Shropshire and Herefordshire County Golf Partnership as part of a nationwide campaign to help people get into golf.

Mark Taylor, county development officer for the Shropshire and Herefordshire CGP, said: "These kind of events are an ideal opportunity to give golf a go. There is no need to spend any money before seeing whether you want to take your interest further.

"For those who do want to carry on with golf there is expert advice and coaching available and the potential to go on and enjoy the many benefits of becoming a member of a golf club."
