It is hoping to raise £3 million in a year to help fund vital investment in the popular attraction.

Nick Ralls, Severn Valley Railway's general manager, said: "We're thrilled to have reached this milestone in such a short space of time.

"What is particularly encouraging is that new shareholders have bought £400,000 worth of shares.

"It's great to have more people on board as we build for the future and we are equally grateful to our existing shareholders for their continued support.

"More than 80 per cent of applications processed have applied for the Enterprise Investment Scheme, which allows eligible taxpayers to reclaim 30 per cent income tax relief from HMRC."

Money raised so far will allow the SVR to start planning for projects including the Heritage Engineering and Building Training Academy.

Apprentices will help in the restoration of the railway's flagship 4930 Hagley Hall locomotive.

The minimum investment in offer shares is £100, followed by multiples of £25.

Benefits include complimentary tickets and SVR travel privileges, depending on the number of shares bought.
