More travel misery as Shrewsbury roadworks return
Motorists in Shrewsbury town centre are to face almost three more months of delays as the second phase of a £1.5 million scheme to enhance the town's Northern Gateway gets under way in early January.
Work in the Castle Foregate area of town will take about 11 weeks to complete once it gets started on January 7. The first stage in the Chester Street area finished on November 30 in time for Christmas.
Work will involve resurfacing the road, installing new traffic lights and upgrading pedestrian and cycle crossings on St Michael's Street and Castle Foregate.
The completed work involved the resurfacing of Chester Street and Cross Street, the construction of a new bus lay-by on Smithfield Road, widening the pavements on Chester Street and installing lighting on the railway bridges.
Simon Jones, Shropshire Council's cabinet member responsible for transport, said the improvements in Chester Street had made a 'huge difference' to the appearance of the area.
"This has been a challenging site to work on so close to the town centre, but the council and our contractors have worked hard to minimise any disruption and maintain access to town for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians," he said.
"Good quality materials and workmanship are clear to see, which can only help to raise the profile of the area."
Traffic signals will be put in at the new crossing outside The Gateway as part of the phase two work.
The council used their term consultants, Mouchel, to design and supervise the scheme. Construction work is being carried out by Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd.
A spokesman for the council said: "Traffic signals will be installed as part of the phase two work.
"The phase two work – which will take around 11 weeks to complete – will concentrate on the Castle Foregate corridor."
