Whitchurch shops and offices scheme is approved

A complex of new shops, offices, a restaurant and coffee bar which could create up to 40 jobs has edged closer in Whitchurch after plans were approved by council officials.

Developer Michael White wants to regenerate buildings in the town centre to create a restaurant and coffee bar, two offices, two apartments and eight shop units – an council planning officers agree.

Shirehall planners approved the scheme at 34-40 High Street under delegated powers.

Permission for the scheme was first granted by the former North Shropshire District Council in 2009, but has now expired.

Mr White's resubmitted plans have been shown the green light by Shropshire Council officials.

Documents linked to the 2009 application indicated the scheme was expected to create about 40 jobs and it was hoped the shop units could entice national retailers to the area.

It means the retail complex plans are back on track just weeks after a separate planning application was lodged to make improvements to Whitchurch Civic Centre, just across the road.

A council report on the retail complex says: "The principle of the conversion of the existing building and development to the rear has been accepted and the changes to policy since the original consent have not altered this position. Accordingly the renewal of the consent is acceptable."

Councillor Rob Hewson, deputy mayor of Whit-church, said: "It is something I welcome. It would be brilliant and make the high street look fantastic."

He added he was pleased there was potential for new jobs.
