River Severn breaks banks near the Iron Bridge as flood waters hit high
Parts of Ironbridge were this afternoon under water as the big festive deluge reached its climax.
The River Severn through the town has broken its banks and one garden with a marquee was submerged in flood water.
Extra flood barriers were in place today along the Severn after the Environment Agency moved swiftly to bolster the defences in Shrewsbury and Ironbridge where river levels peaked last night.
A spokeswoman for the agency said it was purely a 'precautionary measure' but flood warnings remained in place at five points along the river.
Forecasters said better news could be around the corner with a band of more settled weather on its way to the county.
A spokesman for the Met Office said temperatures could reach as high as 11C (52F).
The Boat Inn in Jackfield was also flooded this afternoon.
The river level was 14ft 10ins today, the same as it was on November 21, 2009, but more rain would be needed to match the all-time record of 19ft 1ins of March 21, 1947.
