Tributes paid as ex-mayor of Wellington dies after a short illness
An ex-mayor of Wellington described as a 'bright light' in the town has died after a short illness. Lesley Street died at Coventry University Hospital.
She became ill in early December.
Councillor Street, who died on December 29, leaves her sons Andrew and Adrian and three grandchildren. Her husband Ronald died in 2008.
Andrew, 48, from St Georges, said: "It is a shock and we are a bit lost for words. She was a lovely mum and we were so proud of her and what a brilliant mayor she was and for what she has done for Wellington over the years."
Councillors also paid tribute to the long-serving member of Wellington Town Council, who first took her seat in 1994.
Councillor Street, who lived in Wellington all her life, was also the outgoing mayor, having held the office from 2011/2012.
Town councillor Phil Morris-Jones said he had been friends with Councillor Street for more than 50 years. "A bright light of Wellington has gone out and there will never be another one like her," he said.
"Her whole life was wrapped around Wellington and she would praise it at every opportunity. She gave her whole life to the town and was without doubt the best mayor ever. She was great fun and will be sadly missed."
Current mayor, Councillor Frank Burns, added: "It is very sad and quite a shock. She worked tirelessly for Wellington town and she will be sorely missed."
