The late Gertrude Montague, who died at the age of 87 in June 2005, has been remembered through the naming of a road opposite the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Copthorne.

The road signs at Montague Walk were put up last month at the new housing estate opposite RSH with the name chosen by her former colleague Brian Bennett, from Hanwood.

Miss Montague

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust was contacted by Shropshire Council to help name the road in 2010, and Mr Bennett was approached for his thoughts as he has had a long association working in healthcare in Shrewsbury.

Miss Montague was appointed as matron to the Royal Salop Infirmary, Shrewsbury, Group Training School in 1952, holding the role under 1972, when her job title was changed to principal nursing officer.

She received the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 and retired in 1978.

Mr Bennett said: "I personally will always be grateful to Miss Montague for her professional support to me as a male nurse. This support and encouragement extended throughout my long and wonderful career."
